Diabetes Diet to target Insulin Resistance and the Metabolic Syndrome
Diabetes is still on the rise and affects millions of people worldwide. In 1980, less than 100 million people were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, worldwide. Today, according to the International Diabetes Federation, that number has reached 540 million.
It is erroneously believed that sugar/carbohydrates are at the origin of type 2 diabetes (aka insulin resistance). This misconception is due to the fact that we often talk about blood sugar when referring to diabetes, when in reality, there is no sugar in the blood; it’s glucose that circulates in our blood vessels. Is there a difference? You might ask. There is a huge difference. Sugar is a disaccharide, meaning it is composed of 2 sugars: fructose and glucose. During the breakdown of sugar, the glucose is used for fuel and the fructose is converted to fat for later conversion to glucose when needed (fructose cannot be used for energy; it has to be converted to fat, then to glucose.)
So when a person consumes sugar or carbohydrates, the glucose level in the blood rises. In a healthy person, the glucose is then transported to tissues. In the presence of insulin resistance, the glucose circulates in the blood but does not get absorbed, or uptaken by the cells–no response to insulin. This is often due to the cells being filled with fat. Dr. Neal Barnard explains the relationship between fat and insulin resistance.
Causes of Type 2 Diabetes
Below is a short list of factors that increase the chances of insulin resistance in adults. It’s important to note that these factors’ impact is largely reduced when following a healthy diet. Experts agree that healthy eating is the best way to manage this health challenge.
- Obesity
- Reduced physical activity
- High stress lifestyle
- PCOS (Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome)
- Inflammation
- Age
- Menopause (particularly belly fat accumulation)
Is Type 2 Diabetes Reversible with a Diabetes Diet?
The answer is a resounding YES! but that is not the same as a cure. When you adopt a healthy lifestyle, your glucose will improve. if you revert back to old habits, whatever caused the diabetes will bring it back again. The good news is, whether you are pre-diabetic or have been diabetic for years, a specific nutrition plan designed to target the reduction of adipose tissue and “clean” your cells, will improve insulin response and decrease glucose levels.
We have seen clients decrease their glucose in as little as a few days on the MicroRiche™ Diet. The plan is simple, easy, and works on DAY ONE! It’s a comprehensive plan that includes training in healthy cooking, shopping, eating in restaurants, and daily monitoring. Unfortunately, just reducing your calories, counting carbs, or doing intermittent fasting, will not deliver the same results because chances are you would still eat the same foods that are causing the problem.
Prevent, Manage, and even Reverse Type 2 Diabetes with a Customized Nutrition Plan
If you are curious what these foods are, you will be surprised to know that there is nothing exotic about the food in the MicroRiche™ Diet. It’s based on the Mediterranean diet, which is composed of fresh vegetables found in your regular grocery store, legumes, low sugar fruit, and whole grains. The difference is how these ingredients are combined to increase fiber, vitamins, and minerals, while almost eliminating fat, reducing carbohydrates, and providing just enough protein.
